Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lb breakfast sausage
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar
- 3 tbsp maple syrup
- 2 8-count crescent roll tubes
- 1/4 cup butter
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tbsp everything bagel seasoning
Instructions
- Make the filling: Brown sausage, drain well, and mix with cheddar, maple syrup, and black pepper while warm so cheese starts to melt and bind the filling.
- Roll the dough: Press crescent dough into two rectangles, sealing seams. Spread sausage filling evenly, roll tight into logs, and pinch seams closed.
- Slice pinwheels: Cut each log into 8–10 pinwheels with a sharp serrated knife. Place cut-side up on parchment-lined sheet pans with space between each spiral.
- Glaze and bake: Brush tops with melted butter and maple syrup. Bake at 375°F until golden, puffed, and sausage reaches 165°F in the center.
- Cool slightly and serve: Rest 5 minutes so filling sets—hot maple cheese burns tongues. Serve from sheet pans or stack in a warm baking dish for grab-and-go.
Station workflow
- Chill rolled logs 10 minutes before slicing if dough gets soft—clean spirals need a firm log.
- Bake both sheet pans on middle and upper racks, swapping halfway for even browning.
- Serve with napkins stacked high—these are sticky, handheld, and popular on the way to rigs.
Cleanup
- Use parchment on sheet pans so maple glaze doesn't weld to the metal during baking.
- Soak the sausage mixing bowl immediately—maple and cheese set into a glue once cooled.
Leftovers
- Reheat pinwheels on a sheet pan at 325°F for 8 minutes until warmed through and crust re-crisp.
- Split cold pinwheels and griddle cut-side down with extra maple for a caramelized second-day treat.
